On Friday night, tragedy struck at Taylor Swift's concert in Brazil when a fan named Ana Clara Benevides passed away just before the show. The 23-year-old lost consciousness at the Nilton Santos stadium in Rio de Janeiro and went into cardiorespiratory arrest.
Benevides was rushed to the hospital but unfortunately experienced a second arrest on the way and could not be saved. Devastated by the news, Swift took to her Instagram Stories to share her sorrow and offer condolences to the fan's family and friends.
Swift wrote, "I can't believe I'm writing these words but it is with a shattered heart that I say we lost a fan earlier tonight before my show. I can't even tell you how devastated I am by this. There's very little information I have other than the fact that she was so incredibly beautiful and far too young."
The singer also expressed that she would not be able to address the tragedy during her concert as it overwhelms her with grief. She described the loss as unexpected and shared that she deepy sympathizes with Benevides' loved ones.
It was a particularly hot night in Brazil, with temperatures reaching 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Swift was captured in videos requesting stadium staff to distribute water to the audience and even threw a bottle from the stage to ensure fans stayed hydrated.
Originally planning a tour in Brazil a few years ago, Swift had to cancel due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, she is now able to fulfill her commitment and is scheduled to perform two more shows in Rio de Janeiro before heading to Sao Paulo.
